Mindful Christmas Shopping 🎄✨
Dec 17, 2024
As yogis we strive to live in alignment with yogic principles like aparigraha (non-possessiveness) and ahimsa (non-harming). However, the Christmas season can make this alignment challenging. Between the cultural push for consumerism and our uniquely Aussie summer traditions (beer, BBQ and beach), it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters.
This year, I’ve been reflecting on how to make Christmas more mindful, sustainable, and intentional. As a mother of five, I know firsthand the balancing act between creating family rituals and traditions and living in a way that respects the earth. I’ve also realised Christmas is a perfect opportunity to simplify, reflect, and inspire both my family and my community.
Here are some ideas for a more yogic Christmas 🌱🎁
Where I Do Not Spend Money: What to Avoid
- Cheap, Single-Use Gifts
Instead of mass-produced, disposable presents, focus on gifts with meaning and longevity. Handmade, second-hand, or experience-based gifts leave lasting impressions without creating waste. Think: a private yoga class, a meditation workshop, or homemade jars of hand-blended chai. - Plastic Decorations
Swap plastic for natural alternatives—wooden ornaments, fabric garlands, or crafts made from nature like pinecones or dried flowers. In Australia, native flora like eucalyptus leaves and banksia pods make stunning decorations that are sustainable and uniquely local. - Excessive Wrapping Paper
Single-use wrapping paper creates mountains of waste. Instead, get creative with reusable options like cloth wraps (furoshiki), old newspapers, or kids’ artwork. My friend wraps her handmade Ayurvedic products in upcycled fabrics, and it’s always a hit. - Fast Fashion Outfits
Fast fashion can be tempting for Christmas gatherings. Instead, shop second-hand, borrow from friends, or reinvent something you already own. Choosing quality over quantity reflects the yogic principle of aparigraha—not taking more than we need. - Battery-Operated Toys & Gadgets
It’s easy to overindulge with kids, but toys powered by batteries often break quickly and create waste. Instead, request sustainable gifts like books, art supplies, or outdoor activities. A cricket set, surf lessons, or nature play items align with mindful living.
Where I Do Spend Money: Conscious Choices for a Brighter World
- Supporting Local & Small Artisans
Handmade gifts carry love and intention. Supporting local Australian makers fosters community and reduces environmental impact. - Championing Indigenous Businesses
Many Indigenous Australian makers blend cultural heritage with modern artistry. Supporting their work honours First Nations traditions while helping sustain communities that deserve recognition and respect. - Using My Dollar as a Vote
Every purchase we make supports a certain kind of world. I choose businesses that align with my values: sustainability, ethical sourcing, and fair wages. Avoid the big-billionaire retailers, and look for local businesses doing meaningful work. - Experiences Over Excess
The best gifts aren’t things—they’re experiences. Think restorative yoga classes, a beach picnic, or tickets to a family-friendly outdoor adventure. - Ask for What You Want
Sometimes, well-meaning loved ones give gifts that don’t align with our values. Don’t be shy—ask for what you truly need or want. A journal, an essential oil, or handmade herbal remedies can be so much more meaningful than generic purchases.
